Work life balance – a meditation story
Meditation stories are great to reflect simply on things that really matter. That one is about work life balance and what we want to get out of work and life in general.
An American businessman was on holidays in a small coastal Mexican village, on the orders of his doctor. Unable to sleep after an urgent morning phone call from his office, he went to walk on the pier to clear his head. A fisherman had just docked his boat and inside it were a few large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish.
“How long did it take to catch the fish? “Asked the American.
“Just a little while,” said the Mexican.
“Why do you not stay out longer and catch more? “asked the American.
“I caught enough to feed my family and give to friends,” said the Mexican pouring fish in a basket.
“But … what are you doing with the rest of your time? »
The Mexican looked at him and smiled. “I get up late, fish a little, play with my children, make a siesta with my wife, Julia, and stroll to the village each evening where I drink a little wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a busy life senor. »
The american laughed and sat up. “Sir, I graduated with a MBA from Harvard and I can help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. In very little time, with an increase in catch, you could buy several boats. You will finally have a fleet of fishing boats. »
He continued, “Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you sell directly to the consumer, then open your own cannery. You’d control the product, processing and distribution. You will of course have to leave this coastal village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and finally to New York, where you can run your growing business with a top management team. »
The Mexican fisherman asked, “But senor, how long will all this going to take? »
And the American replied, “15-20 years, no more than 25.»
“And then what senor? »
The American laughed and said, “This is the best part. When the opportunity presents itself, you will introduce your company on the stock market and make lots of money. You will earn millions. »
“Senor Millions? And what then? »
“Then you would retire and move to a small coastal village, where you would get up late, fish a little, play with your children, take a siesta with your wife, stroll to the village each evening where you would have some wine and play guitar with your amigos … ”
